516 Update is seeking an Advertising Sales Representative to expand advertiser coverage and serve as a local point of contact for businesses that prefer an in-person sales process. The role is intended for a self-directed contractor who can build pipeline, conduct meetings, and close business professionally.
Position Summary
This role is responsible for developing new advertising and sponsorship relationships for 516 Update. The representative will prospect local businesses, manage outreach and follow-up, conduct virtual and in-person meetings, and close approved advertising opportunities. During onboarding, the representative may join meetings with the publisher to learn the offering and process. Over time, the expectation is that the representative will manage opportunities independently.
Primary Responsibilities
Develop and maintain a pipeline of prospective advertisers and sponsors, with an emphasis on small and mid-sized local businesses.
Conduct outbound prospecting through calls, email, referrals, and in-person business development.
Respond to inbound inquiries and convert qualified interest into meetings and proposals.
Schedule and conduct sales meetings, including in-person meetings in Nassau County and surrounding markets when appropriate.
Present 516 Update advertising and sponsorship opportunities using approved materials and within approved commercial terms.
Coordinate internally on campaign setup, copy requirements, and launch timing to support a professional advertiser experience.
Maintain organized records of pipeline activity, proposals, closed business, and renewals using the contractor’s preferred CRM or tracking system.
Follow 516 Update advertiser category restrictions, brand standards, and approval procedures.
Required Qualifications
Professional judgment, integrity, and reliability.
Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
Comfort with outbound sales, follow-up, and business development conversations.
Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and maintain consistent follow-through.
Ability and willingness to meet prospective advertisers in person in Nassau County and nearby markets as needed.
Reliable transportation for local meetings.
Comfort using basic business tools such as email, calendar, and a CRM or spreadsheet-based pipeline tracker.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in advertising sales, sponsorship sales, media sales, digital marketing sales, or related B2B sales.
Familiarity with Nassau County and the local small-business market.
Existing relationships in Nassau County, western Suffolk, or Queens business communities.
Compensation and Engagement Terms
This is a commission-only independent contractor opportunity. There is no base salary, draw, hourly compensation, or employee benefits.
For full-cycle sales closed by the representative, commission is 30% of collected revenue on new business and 15% of collected revenue on qualifying renewals.
For outreach or meeting-setting activity that results in closed new business handled by another authorized closer, commission is 8% of collected revenue.
If a sale is jointly worked with another authorized sales representative, shared-credit rules will apply as set forth in the contractor agreement.
Commissions are earned and payable after advertiser payment is received and collected, subject to the terms of the contractor agreement.
The contractor is responsible for all taxes, insurance, ordinary business expenses, and work tools, except for any materials or accounts expressly provided by 516 Update.
Final commission definitions, renewal rules, timing, and any shared-credit mechanics will be documented in a written independent contractor agreement.
Advertiser Guidelines
To protect reader trust and brand standards, 516 Update does not accept certain categories of advertising. Restricted categories include political or issue advertising, adult content, cannabis-related advertising, and other categories identified by the company from time to time. Additional guidance will be provided during onboarding.
Work Arrangement and Support
This is a flexible contractor arrangement. The representative is expected to manage their own schedule and work methods, subject to professional standards and agreed commercial terms.
516 Update can provide a company email address and approved sales materials, including media kit information and advertising guidelines.
The representative may use their preferred CRM or tracking tool, provided records are maintained in an organized and businesslike manner.
