🧵 Sea Cliff Village Museum: A Textile Retrospective

The Sea Cliff Village Museum launched its newest exhibit in late February, drawing visitors eager to explore the region’s rich history of textile artistry. This collection, which runs through July, showcases handmade quilts, embroidered garments, and vintage sewing tools, offering a glimpse into how residents of the 19th and early 20th centuries expressed creativity through fabric.

Among the standout pieces is a newly acquired quilt from the Carpenter family, dating back to the 1820s, along with intricately hand-stitched clothing that reflects a time when people personalized their garments instead of purchasing new ones.

The museum invited local residents to contribute to the exhibit, and longtime Sea Cliff resident Barbara Bell provided items from her family’s collection, dating back to the 1870s. The exhibition has not only highlighted craftsmanship but also sparked conversations about Sea Cliff’s history as a close-knit, self-sustaining community.

For those who missed the opening, the exhibit will remain on display until July, with opportunities for more residents to lend historic textile pieces.

🍽️ Nosh Delivers! Gives Back on MLK Day

In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the nonprofit Nosh Delivers! held a successful food drive outside Robert H. Finley Middle School in Glen Cove. Volunteers, including local students, collected non-perishable food items to help combat food insecurity in the North Shore community.

The event saw overwhelming participation, with dozens of boxes filled with canned goods and other essential supplies. Student volunteers played a major role in sorting and organizing donations, embracing MLK’s message of service and giving back.

Nosh Delivers! continues to operate throughout the year, distributing food to families in need. Those looking to donate or volunteer can still do so through NoshDelivers.org.

🎤 Merrick Public Library’s Open Mic Night Drew Poets and Musicians

Creativity took center stage at the Merrick Public Library on January 27, where poets, musicians, and spoken word artists came together for the library’s recurring Open Mic Night. The event, which has been running since 2023, provided a space for artists of all ages to express themselves and connect with fellow creatives.

The night featured performances by Nassau County Poet Laureates Alan Semerdijan and Paula Curci, as well as a mix of new and returning participants. Organizers noted that while the winter turnout was strong, the event is expected to grow even larger during the summer months, when sessions move outdoors to the library’s garden space.

This quarterly event has quickly become a hub for local artists, and the organizers encourage more people to join in future gatherings.

💰 Freeport-Merrick Rotary Club Provided Free Tax Guidance

With tax season underway, the Freeport-Merrick Rotary Club hosted two free financial seminars to help Nassau County residents navigate tax filing, property tax grievances, and retirement planning. The first session took place on February 6 at Freeport Memorial Library, followed by another on February 10 at Merrick Library.

Attendees received expert advice from financial professionals, including:
Margareth Victor, who provided practical retirement planning strategies.
Dave Denenberg, who explained how homeowners can file property tax grievances online.
Mark Rigeur, who shared tips on maximizing tax refunds and navigating new regulations.

The sessions included Q&A opportunities, allowing residents to get personalized financial advice. Those who missed the events can still access online tools for property tax grievances through Nassau County’s official website.

👗 Glen Cove Thrift Store Helped Young Girls with Clothing Needs

A new thrift store at Finley Middle School, called My Big Sister’s Closet, opened its doors to students this past month. Created by the nonprofit I Am My Sister, the store allows young girls to shop for clothes using “I’m Bucks”, a special currency earned through good behavior, academic achievements, and volunteering.

The initiative, aimed at boosting self-confidence and removing financial barriers, quickly gained momentum. A community-wide clothing drive in Glen Cove resulted in an outpouring of donations, including casual wear, jackets, accessories, and even new undergarments.

The thrift store provides a safe, fun shopping experience where students can pick out items without stigma. Organizers say they hope to expand the program to Glen Cove High School and eventually introduce similar initiatives in other Nassau County communities.

🧠 Trivia Night Raised Funds for Hempstead Harbor Conservation

The Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor’s Junior Ambassadors kicked off the year with an engaging Trivia Night on January 24 at St. Luke’s Parish Hall. The event, designed to be both fun and educational, drew families and friends together for a night of trivia, pizza, and environmental awareness.

Participants formed teams to compete in a mix of general knowledge and harbor-related questions, with proceeds going toward conservation programs in Hempstead Harbor.

Many attendees praised the event’s family-friendly atmosphere, and organizers say it successfully raised awareness about ongoing efforts to protect Nassau County’s coastline. The Junior Ambassadors program continues to offer community involvement opportunities for young environmental advocates.
