Did you know? Long Island’s drinking water begins beneath our feet.

Long Island depends on groundwater from a sole-source aquifer system. That underground supply feeds more than 1,500 public-supply wells across Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Levittown’s effort to upgrade its water-treatment system is becoming more expensive after unexpected costs emerged during the work. The additional spending involves several wells and a contaminant that has forced water districts across Long Island to invest heavily in new treatment technology.

Five Acres Preserved in Oyster Bay Cove

Five additional acres in Oyster Bay Cove will remain protected from future development after being added to a larger open-space preserve. The property’s value goes beyond its appearance, with important implications for groundwater and local wildlife habitat.

Nassau County Firefighters Museum & Education Center, Garden City

This one has more personality than the name suggests. Nassau County and Nassau Tourism describe interactive fire-safety exhibits, a walk-through of the steps of a working fire, and displays tracing the history of local volunteer firefighting, along with the evolution of gear and apparatus. It reads less like a backup plan and more like a real stop.
