Cancer clinical trials can open the door to treatments that aren’t widely available yet. The problem is that getting to them can mean repeated trips into Manhattan.

Mount Sinai South Nassau is trying to change that.

The Oceanside hospital received a $350,000 gift from the Betty Ajces Trust to expand cancer clinical trials available to Long Island patients.

The trust has now given Mount Sinai South Nassau more than $2 million since 2023, across four separate grants.

Hospital officials say the latest funding will help more patients access advanced cancer therapies and treatment protocols closer to home, while also supporting staff at the Gertrude & Louis Feil Cancer Center in Valley Stream.

For patients already juggling appointments, treatment and recovery, cutting down those trips into the city can make a real difference.

A former convent that’s been sitting vacant in Valley Stream could soon have a very different future.

Village trustees unanimously approved a zoning change for a proposed 54-unit apartment building at 94 S. Grove St.

Plans call for 33 one-bedroom and 21 two-bedroom apartments, with ground-level parking and a rooftop lounge.

At least 10% of the apartments would likely be offered as affordable housing if the developer receives financial assistance from the Town of Hempstead IDA.

There’s still another step before construction can begin: the developer now needs site-plan approval from the village.

But after years of vacancy, the property is officially moving closer to redevelopment.

Long Island soccer fans are getting a hometown team to root for.

The United Soccer League has awarded USL Long Island a professional men’s soccer franchise, with plans to begin playing in 2028.

And the home field will be right here in Nassau.

The team plans to play at James M. Shuart Stadium at Hofstra University in Hempstead, a nearly 13,000-seat venue.

USL Long Island will compete in USL League One, the third division of professional soccer in the United States.

The team still needs final league and federation approval, and there’s another detail fans will get to help shape: its permanent name, crest and colors haven’t been chosen yet.

So Nassau isn’t just getting professional soccer. Local fans will have a hand in deciding what the team looks like when it arrives.
