🧑‍⚕️ $4.1M Awarded to Expand Caregiver Training on Long Island

New York State is putting $4.1 million toward caregiver training on Long Island, with Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Commack named as the regional training site.

The funding is meant to help address the shortage of direct care workers by expanding access to training for home health aides, certified nursing assistants, and personal care aides. The program includes free, paid training, plus support meant to help people complete certification and move into caregiving jobs.

For Long Island families, the bigger issue is clear: demand for senior care is growing, and the workforce needs to catch up.

🏀 Three Long Islanders get NBA Summer League opportunities

Three Long Island basketball players are getting a shot at the next level after going undrafted.

Brentwood’s Bryce Harris and Jordan Riley both earned NBA Summer League opportunities after standout college careers, while former Long Island Lutheran player Jalen Celestine also landed a summer roster spot. Summer League tips off July 9, giving all three a chance to compete in front of NBA teams and make their case.

For Brentwood especially, the moment carries extra meaning: two hometown players who grew up chasing the same dream are now getting their first NBA look.
