Its roots date to the mid-20th century, when restrictive housing patterns led Black families to settle and build a strong, vibrant community that remains culturally significant today.

The money will fund a capital program for local businesses, restore the Thomas Powell House, and build an 8,000 square-foot theater with 225 seats. It's all part of bringing more cultural events and economic activity to the area.

New Hyde Park's public works department is wrapping up a $5 million makeover of its facilities, paid for mostly by state grants and the LIRR third track project.
