A $30M Community Center Is Planned for Elmont

Elmont’s forthcoming YMCA community center is described as a $30 million project in Nassau County’s September 21 community update. It would add a dedicated gathering and programming space for families, young people and seniors in southwest Nassau.

The state’s site announcement places the center at 570 Elmont Road, beside Elmont Memorial High School. Plans call for replacing a vacant building with an approximately 18,000-square-foot facility; a $2.5 million state grant supports acquiring the property.

The YMCA was selected to design, build and operate the center, with final programming to be shaped with local stakeholders. The $30 million figure is the reported project value, while $2.5 million is the specific acquisition grant. The cited announcements do not provide an opening date.

Long Beach’s Fall Festival Returns This Weekend

The 28th Annual Long Beach Fall Festival is scheduled for October 10–11, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., in Kennedy Plaza. It’s a two-day chance to spend time downtown and enjoy the city’s fall festivities.

Festival admission is listed as free, with additional charges for rides. Check the organizer’s latest program before heading over, and budget separately for food and any paid activities. The city says vendor applications have closed, so this is a visitor reminder rather than a call for new vendors.

I Almost Threw Out My Keurig. It Wasn't Broken.

Every cup from my Keurig started tasting weak, flat, stale — so I unplugged it and stuck it in a closet. Then I learned the dirty secret of grocery store K-Cups: by the time a pod reaches your kitchen, it's usually spent months going from factory to warehouse to truck to shelf. The flavor oils are long gone. Some brands even over-roast to hide it.

The fix wasn't a new machine. It was fresh pods from Angelino's, a family-owned L.A. roastery that roasts, packs, and ships within 3–5 days — straight to your door, from 39¢ a cup. Over 1,000,000 happy customers. 50+ flavors, no subscription required, and 15% off your first order, applied automatically at checkout.

Mill Neck’s Apple Festival Marks 70 Years

Mill Neck Manor’s Apple Festival returns October 10–11 at 40 Frost Mill Road in Mill Neck, celebrating its 70th year. The organizer’s lineup includes seasonal food, local shopping, live music, pie-eating contests and ASL-interpreted performances.

The festival also supports programs and services for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community. Review the current event details for hours, parking and visitor arrangements before you go. Then leave some room for the apples, cider donuts and baked goods.

$7,000 for one pet surgery. Would your budget survive it?

Vet costs have climbed fast, and the numbers catch most pet owners off guard. Common procedures now run up to $7,000, and a serious diagnosis like cancer can climb past $10,000. Pet insurance exists for exactly these moments, with some plans reimbursing up to 90% of the bill and coverage starting around $10 a month. 516 Update readers can use Money's guide to compare the top-rated options and lock in a plan before the emergency, not after.
