🚒 Floral Park Gets $250K Toward a New Ladder Truck

Floral Park is getting federal help with a very expensive public-safety purchase.

The Floral Park Fire Department will receive $250,000 toward a new hook-and-ladder truck, secured through the federal appropriations process by Rep. Laura Gillen.

The grant covers about 10% of the truck’s total cost, which is expected to exceed $2.7 million.

Why the replacement matters:

• The department’s previous ladder truck was totaled in a 2025 accident

• Firefighters are currently relying on a used 1997 truck

• That vehicle has required frequent servicing and costly repairs

• Floral Park provides mutual aid to communities stretching from Mineola to the New York City border

The department serves nearly 16,000 Floral Park residents, but its reach is much larger. Its mutual-aid area includes almost 130,000 people, and Floral Park operates the only hook-and-ladder vehicle serving Floral Park, Bellerose, South Floral Park, and Stewart Manor.

🤝 Nassau Communities Turn Out for National Night Out

Thousands of people gathered across Nassau County for National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Local events were held in Bethpage, Glen Cove, Hicksville, Hempstead, Manhasset, Massapequa, Port Washington, Westbury, and Williston Park.

The idea was simple: give residents a chance to meet police officers, first responders, local officials, and community organizations outside of an emergency.

What people found at the events:

• Live music and entertainment

• Games and family activities

• Local businesses and community groups

• Informal conversations with law enforcement and first responders

National Night Out is held nationwide on the first Tuesday of August, with the goal of building stronger relationships between residents and the people responsible for local public safety.

🛒 King Kullen and Giunta’s Reach Supermarket Deal

Two longtime Long Island supermarket families are coming together.

Oakdale-based Giunta’s Meat Farms has reached a deal to acquire King Kullen Grocery Co., with the transaction potentially closing as early as September. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Here’s what the deal includes:

• 24 King Kullen supermarkets

• Four Wild by Nature markets

• Giunta’s existing 10 supermarket locations

• All King Kullen and Wild by Nature associates expected to be retained

King Kullen was founded in 1930 and is recognized by the Smithsonian Institution as America’s first supermarket. Giunta’s entered the grocery business in 1952 and is now operated by the third generation of the Giunta family.

The deal comes as Long Island’s grocery market gets increasingly competitive, with Lidl, ALDI, Wegmans, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Stop & Shop, and other chains fighting for shoppers.

For King Kullen, the sale keeps the company in the hands of another locally based, family-owned supermarket business. The workers’ union says it plans to monitor the transition and push for clear communication and representation for employees.
