Long Beach Animal Shelter Set for Major HVAC Improvements
Long Beach is moving ahead with upgrades aimed at improving conditions inside its city animal shelter.
The City Council approved HVAC improvements at the shelter while also extending the city's agreement with Posh Pets Animal Shelter, which has operated the facility since 2014.
City officials said several of the building's existing heating and cooling systems are outdated and require frequent repairs. The shelter also needs better ventilation to bring more outside air into the facility.
The city has a $225,000 grant to help cover HVAC work, although officials said the overall project will exceed that amount. PSEG is separately upgrading the electrical service entering the building at no cost to the city.
Because animals and staff occupy the shelter around the clock, the project is intended to create a more reliable and properly ventilated environment for the facility.

Syosset Library Collects Handmade Blankets for Children in Chemotherapy
Syosset Public Library is turning knitting and crocheting into a community service project this fall.
Through its “Squares That Care” campaign, the library is collecting handmade blankets for We Care Blankets, an organization that distributes them to children undergoing chemotherapy.
The collection runs from September 1 through October 18. Blankets must measure at least 36 by 36 inches, use washable 100 percent acrylic yarn and be made without fringe.
Residents can also donate unused washable yarn at the library's Readers' Services Desk.
The project gives Nassau County residents several more weeks to create something practical and personal for children going through cancer treatment.

Garden City Schools Welcome New Educators Across the District
Garden City Public Schools opened the new academic year with a large group of new teachers and specialists joining classrooms across the district.
Before meeting their students, the incoming educators attended a three-day orientation that included workshops, introductions to district programs and a bus tour of Garden City schools and the surrounding community.
The new staff includes teachers in science, math, social studies, languages, special education, music and elementary education, along with teaching assistants, psychologists, occupational therapists and a physical therapist.
The hires place new educators and support professionals in schools from the elementary level through Garden City High School, with additional specialists serving students districtwide.
