North Hempstead completed the fifth summer of its oyster-reintroduction program by placing one million juvenile oysters in Manhasset Bay.

The latest addition brings the program’s cumulative total to more than five million oysters. Earlier assessments found previously placed oysters alive and growing, according to the report.

A $100,000 grant supported an additional 500,000 oysters. A separate $300,000 town appropriation covers five million oysters distributed from 2024 through 2026 across Manhasset Bay, Hempstead Harbor and the Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor area.

Oysters naturally filter water and provide habitat for marine life. Monitoring will continue to measure survival, growth and the program’s long-term environmental results.

šŸ¦ Family-Run Ice-Cream Boat Serves Nassau’s South Shore Waters

The Mann family is bringing homemade ice cream directly to boaters and waterfront communities aboard a floating ice-cream shop.

Owner Eric Mann and his daughter Caitlin rotate five homemade flavors while serving Massapequa Cove, Hemlock Cove and Zach’s Bay. News 12 reported that the family planned to operate on weekends through the end of September.

Routes and service may depend on weather and boating conditions. Readers should not rely on a specific arrival time unless the business announces one directly.
